As the misguided and counterproductive “war on terror in error” grinds into it’s second decade this weekend has seen a series of attacks launched in Pakistan and Afghanistan. First report is of an attack by some dozens insurgents on a jail in Pakistan freeing some 400 inmates. And in Afghanistan the Taliban have launched a string of assullts on targets across the country.

Chicago has seen it’s share of gangland shootouts and there have been daylight mob hits on the busiest of Chicago’s streets. Anthony Lombardo head of the Union Siciliano and reporter Jack Lingle were both gunned dow in the loop. But the attempted hit that took place on August 10th 1926 set a new standard for brazeness as a gun battle erupted on Michigan Ave. in the heart of the downtown area.

The Man Ray Tom Paine “Reason” Remix

I came across this silent 1923 movie by Man Ray called “Return To Reason”. Mr Ray was a 20th century Dadist. He was born in New York and lived there until 1920 when following the demise of his New York Dadist magazine after one issue he moved to Paris. There he spent decades becoming one of the greats of surrealism working in photography, sculpture, collage and other medium including film. This is his first film from 1923.
That’s what I started with becuae I kind of liked it but thought it needed something more. So I added some outside video, a couple of pictures, and some music but still it needed more. A poem perhaps? So I went to the internet archive audio section and found my way to a reading of American revolutionary Thomas Paine’s “Age of Reason”. It is an intellectual assault on organized relgion that he wrote around the end of the 18th century. It was something he was inspired by the French revolution to write.
So it seemed like the perfect way to wrap the project up. My thanks to the following primary sources.

I Hide In The Shadows / A Poladoid SX-70 Transformation

Another in our experiments done on digitized copies of old Polaroid SX-70 photos. I took hundreds over a twenty year period and have recently come across a group that were packed away and forgotten about.
Among other things I took a series of pictures off of the tv as the scenes were changing looking for some cool overlay effects. This animation started out life as a photo named Overlay1. We scanned it up and did a series of edits making adjustments to the contrast in graduated segments with Gimp. Then I impotred the pictures into Adobe Premiere Elements where the resulting animation was produced.
Following that we turned do our soundman Grand for the finishing touces. He went to FreeSoundProject http://www.freesound.org/

In the 1930’s IBM helped the Nazi government develop sophisticated tools for identifying Jews and where they lived making it much easier to imprison them, seize their assets and eventually liquidate them. Today high tech companies have developed sophisticated tools like Google, You Tube, Facebook, The latter partially funded w/ $ from a CIA front company.
